MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University men’s soccer team attempts to get its first win this season with its final road games of September this weekend.

The Wildcats open their GLIAC schedule by playing Saginaw Valley State in University Center at 1 p.m. today, then travel to nearby Midland to face Northwood at 3 p.m. Sunday.

NMU was picked fifth in the preseason coaches GLIAC poll after reaching the quarterfinals of the conference tournament in April.

With the majority of last spring’s team back this fall, among them are four All-GLIAC honorees last spring — senior Kaffie Kurz, juniors Ryan Palmbaum and Jonas Vorbau and sophomore Niko Scheibal.

Vorbau has 14 saves, second in the GLIAC, and an .875 save percentage, third in the league.

But the Wildcats have only scored one goal in three games, compiling an 0-2-1 record.

That goal was scored by junior Keegan Schmidt in a 1-1 opening tie at Judson in Elgin, Illinois.
