Negaunee Miners girls basketball team makes enough free throws to get 47-40 win at Marquette
MARQUETTE — Free throws outnumbered baskets for both teams on Monday night, but Negaunee had just a bit higher overall numbers to escape with a 47-40 high school girls basketball victory over Marquette on Monday night.
The Miners made 16 of 23 free throws, led by Emilia Palomaki making 7 of 8 and Lilly Nelson 4 of 6.
But it was teammate Alyssa Hill who led Negaunee scorers with 16 points. Nelson finished with 11 and Palomaki nine.
Numbers were similar for the Redettes, who made 15 of 22 at the line, led by Maria Millado making 6 of 8 and Averie Kelly 4 of 4.
Millado matched Hill to share game-scoring honors with 16 points, while Kelly had 10.
The Miners led in a low-scoring first half, taking a 10-3 lead after one quarter and 17-12 advantage at halftime. Negaunee extended its lead to 33-22 by the end of the third quarter.
Marquette won the JV game 53-47, while the Miners prevailed in the freshman contest, 54-35.

Munising 31, Rapid River 29
At Munising, Mustangs coach Matt Mattson credited his defense for keeping his team afloat despite them barely shooting 20 percent from the field and 40 percent from the free-throw line.
“We feel fortunate,” Mattson said. “This game was really ugly at times, but we played pretty good defense to keep us in the game.”
Munising made just 10 of 49 from the field — 20.4 percent — and 9 of 22 at the line — that’s 40.9 percent — but the Mustangs made their free throws when they had to.
“We didn’t take our first lead the whole game until there were 7 seconds left,” Mattson said. “That’s when (freshman Emerson) Crisp made a pair of free throws to give us a 30-29 lead. Then (Rapid River) fouled us again and Alivia Killips made 1 of 2 for the two-point margin.”
Munising’s Jenna Matson led all scorers with nine points, including a 3-pointer, while Crisp added eight points.
The Mustangs also won the JV game 65-12.
