Freshman Selena Johnson leads Northern Michigan University at GLIAC indoor track finals

UNIVERSITY CENTER — Freshman Selena Johnson produced Northern Michigan University’s top finish at the women’s GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championship hosted by Saginaw Valley State on Saturday and Sunday.

Johnson was runner-up in the triple jump with a mark of 11.26 meters (36 feet, 11 1/4 inches).

The Wildcats finished fifth among nine teams with 51 1/2 points, just 1 1/2 behind fourth-place Wayne State. Grand Valley State won the title for the 22nd straight year, rolling up 255 1/3 points to 138 1/2 for runner-up SVSU. Ashland was third with 97 1/2, while Davenport was sixth with 28 1/3, Ferris State seventh with 18 5/6, Wisconsin-Parkside eighth with 11 and Northwood ninth with nine.

GVSU also won the men’s title with 249, followed by Ashland with 172.

Northern’s distance medley relay was third in its meet in 12 minutes, 26.60 seconds with Anna Kelley, Lauren Alarie, Hannah Jones and Elise Longley.

NMU picked up three fourth places — Jones in the 800 in 2:15.72, Johnson in the long jump in 5.31 meters (17-5) and the Wildcats in the 1,600 relay with Alarie, Jones, Jovana Vukas and Sydney Romps.

A pair of fifth places were recorded — Nina Augusten in the pentathlon with 3,015 points and Ninti Little in the long jump with 5.29 meters (17-4 1/2).

The Wildcats’ lone sixth placer was Dunja Drobac in the triple jump with 10.57 meters (34-8 1/4).

A quartet of sevenths came from Madison Malon in the 3,000 in 10:39.80 and the 5,000 in 18:34.51, along with Madison Campbell in the pentathlon with 2,949 points and the high jump after she cleared 1.59 meters (5-2 1/2).

Four eighth places came in, too — Little in the triple jump with 10.35 meters (33-11 1/2), Longley in the mile in 5:13.25, Romps in the 400 in 1:02.17 and Marquette Senior High School graduate Izabelle Peterson in the 60 in 11.75 seconds.
