‘Zach Attack’ leads Westwood Patriots to 68-64 double-overtime boys basketball victory over Ishpeming
ISHPEMING — It truly was the Zach Attack at Westwood High School on Thursday night. But not until the Patriots and Ishpeming played six periods of boys basketball.
A pair of junior-class Zacharys combined for 61 points as Westwood held off the Hematites 68-64 in double overtime.
Zach Carlson scored 35 points while Zach Beckman added 26 for Westwood. Carlson made 6 of 8 free throws and Beckman 8 of 12, both making multiple charity tosses during the two OTs.
Junior Jayce Kipling led Ishpeming with 19 points, including three 3-pointers, while sophomore Griffin Argall added 17 points, sophomore Alex Sundberg had 13 and freshman Hunter Smith nine.
The Pats jumped out to a 19-17 lead after one quarter before Ishpeming grabbed a 32-29 advantage at halftime.
Westwood reasserted itself in the third period to take a 40-38 edge, while the Hematites scored 17 points in the final regulation quarter to force OT at 55-55.
No score was available at the end of the first OT, though surely it was still tied, otherwise a second extra period wouldn’t have been needed.
