Northern Michigan University volleyball team earns national poll votes

MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University volleyball team received votes in this week’s NCAA Division II coaches poll conducted by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

The Wildcats, who opened their season with a two-match split at Ferris State last weekend, received 38 votes, the 33rd most in the poll as 25 teams are officially ranked.

Ferris State was two spots behind NMU in 35th with 30 votes.

NMU opens its home season on Friday and Saturday afternoon at Vandament Arena facing Saginaw Valley State.

Three former GLIAC members are in the top 15, including Hillsdale (9-0) as No. 1 with 34 of 47 first-place votes and 1,148 poll points. Walsh (7-1) in seventh with 797 points and Findlay (6-1) 12th with 600 votes.

The only current GLIAC school in the top 25 is Michigan Tech (2-0) in 23rd with 192 votes, though Grand Valley State (30th), Ashland (37th), Northwood (42nd) and Wayne State (45th) also received votes.
