Alyssa Hill leads Negaunee girls basketball, Superior Central boys fall just short

NEGAUNEE — Alyssa Hill scored 14 of her game-high 18 points in the middle two quarters to lead Negaunee to a 43-29 victory over Hancock in a high school girls basketball game played Wednesday evening.

With Hill adding eight rebounds and five blocked shots to her stat line, teammate Lilly Nelson knocked down four 3-pointers in the first half to add 14 points to the winning effort.

The Miners took control early, leading 16-5 after one quarter and 30-10 at halftime.

“Tonight was a battle for four quarters,” Negaunee head coach Mike O’Donnell said. “Hancock really gets after you and makes you play all over the floor.

“We struggled from the perimeter and just couldn’t knock down our open opportunities. Defensively, we played well and that won us the game.”

Kalli Chynoweth paced Hancock scorers with 12 points, which included a trio of triples.

Carney-Nadeau 56, Superior Central boys 50

In a boys game played Wednesday at Carney, the visiting Cougars put together a furious second-half comeback that fell short in the end.

C-N built leads of 17-4 after one quarter and 38-14 at halftime. But SC doubled the Wolves output in the second half, 36-18, to come within six points at the end.

“Carney had a hot shooting start and we dug a big hole to climb out of,” Cougars coach Adam Ely said. “The second half was more about us and trying to match their intensity and energy and in doing so hopefully we learned a little about ourselves.”

SC’s Kyle Frusti led all scorers with 25 points, getting 17 of those points after halftime as he finished 7 of 9 at the free throw line.

Teammate Parker Maki added 18 points, 14 coming in the second half as he made two 3-pointers.

Beau Koffman paced C-N with 21 points, including a pair of 3s.
