Marquette swimmers open season with a splash by beating Manistique

MARQUETTE — Marquette dominated in its home pool against Manistique on Monday, defeating the Emeralds 141-32 in the girls meet and 131-37 in boys action.

The Redmen and Redettes won 23 of the 24 events contested as Manistique’s lone victory came in the boys’ 50-yard freestyle, claimed by Dustin Brewster in 26.03 seconds, a nearly two-second victory over MSHS’ Jake Elzinga.

“What a great evening in the pool at Marquette Senior High School,” MSHS head coach Nathan McFarren said in an email. “Not only because of the swims, but that we were able to have a swim meet run safely during a pandemic.”

He noted that there were 38 qualifying times for the Upper Peninsula Finals between his two teams despite their only having one week of practice. Manistique also had several U.P. qualifiers, too.

The Redmen and Redettes swim at Houghton today.

On Monday, Marquette had a quartet of four-time winners, each victorious in two individual events along with swimming with part of two winning relays.

For the girls, Lexi LaCombe won the 200-yard freestyle and 200 butterfly and Delaney Marchiol the 200 free and 100 breaststroke. Both also swam with the 200 medley and 400 free relay winners.

Among the boys, Colin VanderSchaaf took the 200 individual medley and 500 free, while Liam McFarren won the 100 fly and 100 breast. Each swam with the 200 medley relay winners, while VanderSchaaf was also with the 400 free relay victors and McFarren with the 200 free relay champions.

Two girls and a boy won three events each. Kelsey Glover took the girls’ 100 backstroke and was with the 200 medley and 200 free relays, Grace Sobczak won the girls’ 500 free and was with the 200 medley and 400 free relays, and Bobby Caron took the boys’ 100 back and swam with the 200 free and 400 free relays.

There were several double winners, too. Maverick Baldwin swam with the boys’ 200 free and 400 free relays while also finishing second by 0.05 of a second in the 200 free, while Elena Henry took the girls’ 200 IM and swam with the 400 free relay.
