Marquette, Negaunee roar to high school volleyball wins

MARQUETTE — Marquette swept Menominee in three sets to win its first Great Northern Conference high school volleyball match of the season on Tuesday.

The Redettes prevailed 25-11, 25-21, 25-15 to improve their overall record to 2-0.

“(This match) was a great team win and everyone was able to contribute,” MSHS coach Ann Crandell-Williams said. “It’s great to have a group of strong players, where we can put a number of combinations on the floor and have them be successful.

“Their serving, passing and blocking game was really on point. It’s a good way to start off conference play.”

In a match where nine Marquette players had kills, Seiler Hruska led the way with seven and had a sterling attack percentage of .600.

Teammate Maria Millado added four kills without an attack error, while Ella Jezewski, Celinda Brunswick and Arlie Kulbieda had three apiece.

The Redettes’ Piper Lakenen had 11 sets as Ari Holder added eight.

Taylor Marquardt made seven service aces with just one error as Marquette had a half-dozen players each with at least three aces. Brunswick had five, Millado four and Hruska, Lakenen and Roxy Nelson added three each.

Millado led another team effort in digs with nine as eight of her teammates also had at least one dig. That included Hruska with six and Holder and Brunswick with three apiece.

Millado, though, was the one-woman wrecking crew as she had five of her team’s seven blocks, four of them solo.
