SAULT STE. MARIE — The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team dropped a heartbreaker on the road to Lake Superior State 59-54 on Thursday night. It was the Lakers’ first win over the Wildcats in 13 games.

LSSU (7-16, 3-13 GLIAC) also snapped NMU’s two-game win streak, dropping the Wildcats to 9-7 in the GLIAC and 12-12 overall. The Wildcats are in fifth pace in the conference standings with four games to go in the regular season.

Makaylee Kuhn led NMU with 16 points, nine in the first half to help the Wildcats whittle their deficit to 31-24 at the break.

NMU trailed by two midway through the third quarter and tied things up at 38 on a triple from Baleigh Delorit and took the lead shortly after on a pair of free throws from Erin Honkala.

Honkala proceeded to hit a 3-pointer to end the quarter, putting the Wildcats up 43-42 headed to the fourth.

The Lakers regained the lead in the final frame. NMU was able to cut things to 57-54 with 1:17 remaining, but were unable to complete the comeback.

NMU shot 19 of 55 from the field for 34.5 percent. LSSU was better in that category, going 21 of 47 for nearly 45 percent.

Jessica Schultz added 13 points for NMU while Kuhn finished with a team-high six rebounds. The Wildcats visit Ferris State (17-7, 11-5 GLIAC) at 3 p.m. Saturday.
