Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team seeks 2nd GLIAC win today

MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team looks to even its GLIAC record at 2-2 when the Wildcats host Ashland at 5:30 p.m. today at the Berry Events Center.

NMU (4-7, 1-2 GLIAC) also hosts Wayne State at 1 p.m. Saturday back at the Berry.

Ashland is 7-4 overall but just 0-3 in GLIAC games this season, though the Eagles lead the all-time series vs. NMU 18-9, including a 55-54 win in their most recent clash in Marquette during the 2017-18 season.

Wayne State is 4-3 and 1-2 as the Warriors hold a 40-36 series advantage with wins in their last two meetings.

The Wildcats two most recent games were nonconference losses at home, 70-52 against former league member Hillsdale on Dec. 19 and 80-75 to NCAA Division III Ripon on Dec. 21.

Three Northern players averaged more than 10 points per game in the two most recent games as sophomore Dolapo Olayinka averaged 12.5 points with 10 vs. Hillsdale and 15 vs. Ripon. Senior Sam Taylor and freshman Noah Parcher also averaged double figures over those two games.

For the season, Taylor leads the team at 11.7 ppg, while sophomore Troy Summers is at 10.5 ppg and Parcher and senior Marcus Matelski average 8.7 ppg.

Senior Myles Howard is the team’s leading rebounder at 6.3 per game, with Taylor averaging 5.0 and junior Alec Fruin 4.7. Howard is the team’s blocked shots leader, while Taylor is tops in assists and steals.
