Kameron Karp, Drew Wyble lead Marquette boys basketball to 69-61 victory over Brighton at Petoskey Tournament

PETOSKEY — Kameron Karp and Drew Wyble each scored 17 points to lead Marquette to a 69-61 boys basketball victory over Brighton to open the Petoskey Tournament on Friday night.

The Redmen are scheduled to face the winner of Friday’s other semifinal, the host Northmen, at 1:30 p.m. today back in Petoskey.

Marquette sizzled with it shooting touch, making 62 percent of its shots (23 of 37). Lincoln Sager scored all nine of his points on a trio of 3-pointers.

The game was close at the end of each of the first three quarters — Brighton led 15-14 after one, 34-32 at halftime and 48-46 after three.

Then the Redmen offense went into high gear in the fourth quarter, scoring 23 points, led by Wyble scored 13 in that frame with 4 of 5 free throws, three 2-pointers and a triple.

Ty Lotterman also aided the MSHS offense with 11 points, while Jacob Edwards paced Brighton with 18.

While Brighton actually sank four more field goals, Marquette held a big advantage at the free-throw line — the Redmen were 14 of 23 with Brighton just 3 of 7.

Munising 59, Stephenson 48

At Munising in a game made up from Thursday, Austin Killips scored 18 points to lead the Mustangs.

After trailing 19-17 at the end of the first quarter, Munising started taking control in the second and went ahead 30-27 at halftime. They extended the lead to 45-36 after three quarters, too.

Josh Huotari scored 11 points and Sam Brown 10 for the Mustangs, who didn’t make any 3-pointers but were 15 of 24 at the free-throw line compared to 8 of 15 for Mid Pen.

Bryce Kushner and Taylor Monette paced the Wolverines with 12 points apiece, all of Monette’s coming on four treys.

Munising plays at Engadine on Monday.
