MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University used the friendly waters of the PEIF pool to defeat Wisconsin-Stevens Point by decisive margins Saturday in both men’s and women’s meets.

The NMU teams are off until Thursday, Dec. 5, when they travel to Grand Rapids for the three-day Calvin College Invitational.

NMU women 203, UWSP 86

Northern freshman Michaela Nelson won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 10.94 seconds and the 500 freestyle in 5:13.46, while sophomore Briana Arnold took the 100 backstroke in 1:01.05 and 100 butterfly in 1:00.09.

And junior Cassandra Clark won the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.85 and 200 breast in 2:33.19, while junior Margaret Vaitkus claimed the 50 free in 25.23 and 100 free in 54.47.

Other individual event wins were posted by freshman Maria Arakelian in the 1,000 free in 10:43.12, freshman Francesca Gastrow in the 200 free in 1:58.28, freshman Meritzell Font Cantarero in the 200 butterfly in 2:08.46, freshman Jenna Joerger in the 200 back in 2:10.58 and junior Gabriella Spajic in the 400 IM in 4:40.59.

In diving, NMU sophomore Mary Grossman won the 3-meter event with 301.45 points with senior Jamie Kimble was second with 265.95, both NCAA Division II national meet “B” qualifying cuts.

Northern also won two relays. Vaitkus, freshman Lauren Melendez-Rivero, sophomore Briana Arnold and senior Madelyn Irelan took the 200 free relay in 1:50.78, while Font Cantarero, Gastrow, Nelson and freshman Julianna Engesser won the 400 free relay in 3:38.49.

NMU men 191, USWP 104

Wildcats’ junior Ondrej Zach was a triple winner, taking the 1,000 free in 9:41.61, 200 fly in 1:56.09 and 500 free in 4:43.38.

Freshman Erikas Kapocius won both of his individual events, the 100 back in 54.41 and 400 IM in 4:15.04, while freshman Ivan Amillo Escobedo won the 200 free in 1:44.79 and 100 free in 47.16. Escobedo beat out senior teammate Jonas Reinhold by 0.15 of a second in the 200.

Reinhold added a win in the 200 IM in 1:59.11.

Senior Lajos Budai took the 50 free in 21.19 and 100 fly in 51.81.

Other individual winners were sophomore Levi Lewis in the 200 back in 1:58.87 and freshman Roberto Camera in the 200 breast in 2:06.96.

In diving, freshman Micah Currie scored 437.05 points in the 1-meter event to not only win, but set an NMU pool record.

In relays, NMU won twice. Budai, Camera, Amillo Escobedo and senior Maksim Kapustin won the 200 medley in 1:32.65, while Camera, Lewis, Reinhold and senior Michael Biclawski took the 400 free in 3:11.65.
