MARQUETTE — Several area teams moved into and out of the top five in their respective Upper Peninsula high school football polls for the final week of voting by select members of the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

With the polls released today, Westwood (7-2) made the move from the “others” list into fourth place among Large Schools after the Patriots felled Negaunee 42-14 in Ishpeming on Friday.

The Miners (6-3) took the opposite tack, falling from No. 4 to not receiving a vote.

Marquette (5-4) remained at No. 3 after wrapping up the Great Northern Conference title with a 31-7 drubbing of Kingsford.

No. 1 Calumet, No. 2 Escanaba and No. 5 Menominee also remained in place among Large Schools.

Among Small Schools, L’Anse (4-5) fell from fifth to the “others” list after losing to Calumet 50-28 on Friday, while Ishpeming (7-2) remained solid at No. 2 after bouncing Bark River-Harris 54-8 on Thursday. The Broncos actually received one more vote this week despite the drubbing delivered by the Hematites.

No. 1 Iron Mountain, No. 3 West Iron County and No. 4 Lake Linden-Hubbell remained in place among Small Schools, while St. Ignace took over the No. 5 position vacated by the Purple Hornets.

The Eight Player poll remains frozen in place. While No. 2 Pickford picked up a first-place vote for the first time, North Central still has a stranglehold on the top spot, with Forest Park at No. 3, Engadine at No. 4 and Cedarville at No. 5.

No area schools received votes in the Associated Press’ state polls, also released today, though some U.P. teams did — Escanaba is tied for 11th in Division 4; Calumet 10th in Division 6; Iron Mountain tied for fifth in Division 7; and North Central first, Pickford third and Forest Park sixth in 8-Player.
