Negaunne Miners girls tennis now 2-1 this season after 6-2 win over Gladstone

NEGAUNEE — Negaunee bumped its record back up above the .500 mark with a 6-2 high school girls tennis win at home against Gladstone on Wednesday afternoon.

“We did some good things today but we’re still learning how to handle certain situations,” Miners head coach Kyle Saari said as his team improved to 2-1.

“Annika (Tervo) was solid at (No.) 4 (singles) and (No. 3 singles player) Lexi (Mason) has probably been our steadiest player all year. (No. 2 singles player) Jill Skewis really picked it up as the match went on and figured things out, too.”

Each was a winner, with Skewis taking a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Gladstone’s Alaina Trudeau, Mason a 6-0, 6-2 win over Kate Matthews and Tervo a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Lilly Griebel.

Negaunee’s hardest fought wins came in doubles, though, where it came up with a pair of three-set victories.

At No. 2, Shayla Menhennick and Tianna Williams outlasted Emily Marenger and Emma Delaire 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, while at No. 3, Shayla Williams and Madi Austin got by Alesha Marenger and Sara Eilola 7-5, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3.

Gladstone’s win came at No. 1 singles and No. 4 doubles.

Negaunee will be involved in a triple dual with Marquette at Westwood today to replace the originally scheduled Westwood Invitational.
