Superior Central girls, Republic-Michigamme boys win events at Norway track

NORWAY — Danica Walters of Superior Central won two girls events while the Republic-Michigamme boys 3,200-meter relay was also a winner at the Norway Invitational high school track and field meet held Monday.

Walters, a junior, took the 800 in a personal best 2 minutes, 34.81 seconds while adding the 1,600 title in 5:50.34.

“I just kept up my confidence and made sure I stuck with the game plan,” Walters said to the Escanaba Daily Press after she shattered her previous best time in the 800 by 10 seconds. “I also felt pretty good in the 1,600, although my time today wasn’t what I usually do.

“Today’s races were mostly about strategy. I just try to focus on what I’m trying to accomplish.”

Senior Sophia Maki added a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 100 and 200 as the Cougars totaled 22 points for ninth place in an 11-team field.

R-M’s quartet of Jarred Boshears, Jake Carlson, Justin Anthony and Andrew Olender won the 3,200 relay in 9:25 as Boshears added a second place in the 3,200 and third in the 1,600.

Anthony was fourth in the 3,200, while Olender was fifth in the 800 and sixth in the 1,600.

The Hawks scored 31 points to finish sixth in the 11-team boys meet.
