Marquette Senior High School girls soccer team wins 4 of 5 games in past week

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School girls varsity soccer team opened its home season with a win over the Houghton club team on Tuesday.

That followed a runner-up finish at the five-team Ogemaw Heights tournament held in downstate West Branch on Saturday.

MSHS plays in the Lakeland Thunderbird Shootout in Minocqua, Wisconsin, on Saturday.

On Tuesday, the Redettes won 3-0 as sophomore Paige Britton scored twice and fellow sophomore McKayla Quigley added the third goal against the Gremlins.

Britton scored the game’s opening goal with an assist from junior Ivy Pickard before Quigley earned her first score of the season on what was termed a beautiful cross from junior Reegan Ketzenberger.

The scoring was completed when Britton scored on a crossing pass from senior captain Lauren Kurzawa.

Marquette’s midfielders were credited with locking down their portion of the field to keep Houghton from getting much started offensively.

On Saturday, the Redettes won three of four games for its second-place finish.

They opened with a 3-1 victory over Tawas Area as Kurzawa and Ketzenberger each scored off direct kicks made by junior captain Emilee Gooch. Ketzenberger finished with two goals as she also scored a goal that was assisted by Kurzawa.

Kurzawa and Ketzenberger scored in Marquette’s 2-0 victory over Sault Ste. Marie before MSHS suffered its only loss of the day, 1-0 to Alpena.

Finally, the Redettes pounded the host Falcons 6-0 as Pickard accounted for three scores. Ketzenberger, Gooch and junior Ketlove Gray each had a goal, while Britton chipped in with three assists.
