Marquette Redettes softball team splits with Bark River-Harris

MARQUETTE — The Marquette softball team had an afternoon of mixed results Tuesday in a doubleheader against visiting Bark River-Harris.

The Redettes got a no-hitter from pitcher Amanda McIntire to help earn a 4-1 win over the Broncos in the first game played at Lions Field in Marquette Township.

Then in the second game, Marquette fell behind early and couldn’t catch up in a 9-3 loss.

“Amanda pitched very well today,” Marquette head coach Paul Seibert said. “She also threw three innings of no-hit ball in the second game (as a reliever). She was really focused and had good command of her pitches and threw them all really well.”

In the opener, BR-H got on the scoreboard first when Riley Arndt reached base on an error, then scored on a wild pitch. However, the Redettes answered with two runs to take the lead. Rayna Warchock started things off with a base hit and two batters later, she scored on a single by Lexi Trombley. Trombley later scored on a wild pitch.

Marquette padded its advantage in the third inning with two more runs. Warchock led off with a walk and then went to third on a single by Sofia van den Ende. Warchock scored on a fielder’s choice by Trombley and van den Ende crossed home on a double by Maiya King.

That’s all the Redettes needed as McIntire kept the Broncos at bay for the rest of the game. McIntire finished with two walks and 12 strikeouts to pick up the win in the circle, while Eden Oswald was dealt the loss for BR-H. She gave up four runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the Broncos again got on the board first, but this time, they didn’t let up as they held a 7-0 lead going into the bottom of the third inning. The Redettes got one run back in their half of the third, but BR-H kept rolling, adding one run in the fourth and another in the fifth to take a big 9-1 advantage.

Oswald got the win for the Broncos as she gave up three runs on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Warchock took the loss for Marquette after surrendering eight runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts in four innings.

Jordan Haynes went 2 for 4 for the Redettes, while van den Ende was 1 for 3 with an RBI and run scored, and King went 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Tatiana LaFave and Cierra Ouradnik both hit homers for the Broncos.

“We made a couple of mistakes and came out flat,” Seibert said. “We hung in there, though. Amanda kept us in the game (in relief of Warchock) and we had our chances, but just didn’t come through.”
