Bangin’ out the runs: Marquette posts 10-1, 14-4 baseball wins at Negaunee

NEGAUNEE — Marquette had a strong day offensively as the Redmen swept Negaunee in a high school baseball doubleheader, 10-1 in the opener and 14-4 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Marquette struck first with two runs in the top of the second inning and kept padding its lead from there before capping things off with a four-run surge in the fifth. Negaunee scored

its lone run in its half of the fifth on an RBI single by Adam Ogea.

Hunter Doucette led the Redmen as he went 3 for 4 with four RBIs and a run scored. Brendan Kaski had two hits and two RBIs for Marquette, while Bryce Brazeau went 2 for 3 with two runs scored.

Tyler Delmont picked up the win on the mound for Marquette after giving up one run and two hits in 4 2/3 innings. He also struck out four and gave up one walk. Alex Munson took the loss for the Miners, allowing six runs on five hits in four innings of work. He struck out two and walked six.

In Game 2, it didn’t take long for Marquette to get rolling as it plated four runs in the top of the first. Negaunee answered with two in its half of the inning, but the Redmen added another run in the second for a 5-2 lead.

The game stayed close until Marquette put the game away with three in the fifth and six more in the sixth.

Brazeau went 2 for 4 for the Redmen with three RBIs and a run scored, while Doucette had two hits, one a home run, along with an RBI and four runs scored. Kaski added two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored.

Tylor Thiel-Robinson had a hit and three RBIs for the Miners, while Ogea had a hit and an RBI and Jacob Ennett went 2 for 3 with a double and run scored.

James Bender notched the victory for Marquette after giving up five hits and two walks while striking out four. Negaunee’s Michael Potvin was dealt the loss after giving up five runs on four hits in four innings.

On Wednesday, the Redmen host Escanaba while the Miners entertain Superior Central in a pair of doubleheaders.
