ISHPEMING — Colton Yesney was enjoying a successful cross country season until two weeks ago when he suffered a season-ending ankle injury.

The Negaunee senior, however, received his due during Thursday’s meeting of Upper Peninsula cross country coaches.

Yesney, who was undefeated prior to his injury, received Male Runner of the Year honors for the second straight year.

He captured the Upper Peninsula Division 1 title a year ago in a course-record 15 minutes, 49.8 seconds for 3.1 miles at Beauchamp’s Grove in Flat Rock, but was unable to run in this year’s finals at Pictured Rocks Golf Club in Munising.

Joining him on the Dream Team were Ishpeming junior Spencer Giroux, Marquette seniors Garrett Rudden and Luke Rambo, Houghton senior Clayton Sayen, Brimley sophomore Austin Plotkin and Gladstone junior Adam Bruce.

Bruce captured the M-PC title and placed fourth in the U.P. D-1 finals.

Sayen earned his first U.P. championship, edging Rudden by a step, and was crowned West PAC champion.

Rambo repeated as Great Northern Conference champion and placed third in the U.P. D-1 Finals and Plotkin retained his U.P. D-3 crown and was Eastern U.P. Conference champ.

Giroux took the D-2 title and was runner-up in the M-PC.

Negaunee senior Emily Paupore set a course record of 19:00 in the M-PC meet in Negaunee Township, captured her first U.P. title and earned Female Runner of the Year honors.

Joining her on the Dream Team were Munising junior Madeleine Peramaki, Marquette sophomore Ericka Asmus, Negaunee senior Clara Johnson, Sault Ste. Marie senior Mackenzie Kalchik, Mid Peninsula freshman Daisy Englund and Chassell junior Lela Rautiola.

Peramaki took the Skyline Central Conference title for the first time and was runner-up in D-3, while Rautiola was the West PAC champ and placed third in the U.P. Finals.

Asmus was GNC champion and U.P. D-1 runner-up and Kalchik copped the Straits Area Conference title and placed third in the finals.

Englund gained her first U.P. D-3 championship and placed fourth in the Skyline meet despite running on a sore ankle.

St. Ignace’s Mary Cullen, who led the Saints to their first U.P. title in five years, was selected D-2 Coach of the Year, and the Saints shared large school Team of the Year honors with D-1 champion Marquette.

Traci Welch, who guided the Houghton boys to their first U.P. title in six years, is this year’s D-1 Coach of the Year. The Gremlins were selected Team of the Year and Brimley gained similar honors in D-3.

Chassell was this year’s pick for small school girls’ Team of the Year and Marco Guidotti, who also guided the Chassell girls to their third U.P. title in four years and the boys to a runner-up finish, is Coach of the Year.
