High school volleyball districts open tonight

MARQUETTE — Just over half of area teams — six of 11 — begin the high school volleyball postseason tonight. The other five kick off their district tournaments on Tuesday night.

Munising faces Superior Central at 7 p.m. today in Rapid River to kick off that Class D district.

Newberry travels to play at Manistique in a 6 p.m. match in a nontraditional Class C district hosted by Harbor Springs.

While “traditional” districts have all matches played at the host site, “nontraditional” tourneys have some or all matches held at the site of one of the schools involved in the games.

That’s usually done because of a wide geographical area a district covers, such as the Harbor Springs one with two Lower Peninsula and three Upper Peninsula schools in it.

Two more area teams also begin play today. In a Class C nontraditional tourney at L’Anse, the Purple Hornets host Calumet at 7 p.m., while just a few minutes earlier in Dollar Bay, Baraga plays Lake Linden-Hubbell at 6:45 p.m. in a Class D event.

Two districts open Tuesday.

Marquette plays in a nontraditional district hosted by Alpena. This Class A district has the Redettes traveling to Petoskey at 5:30 p.m. with the winner getting four days off until heading to Alpena for the semifinals and finals Saturday.

Negaunee hosts four western Marquette County schools in a Class C district. Westwood faces Ishpeming at 6 p.m., while the host Miners face Gwinn at 7:30 p.m.
