KINGSFORD — Marquette swept the four flights of singles and carried doubles, too, in a 7-1 high school girls tennis victory at Kingsford on Monday afternoon.
MSHS coach Derek Sandstrom singled out No. 2 player Elysa Olivier and No. 4 Natalie Robinia for his praise.
“The singles girls really carried the day for us, with Elysa and Natalie continuing what they started last week,” Sandstrom said.
The only match that went three sent came at No. 2 doubles, where Rachel Ely and Carly Sandstrom outlasted Brooke Blaskowski and Annie McCole 6-1, 2-6, 8-6.
“The last match out was the most competitive, with (No.) 2 doubles coming back in the third to win,” Sandstrom said.
He added that he was pleased that the solar eclipse going on during the match didn’t divert his team’s attention.
“The girls showed maturity by focusing on the court and not the eclipse overhead; dealing with that distraction well bodes well for the girls in tournaments.”
Kingsford got its lone win at No. 3 doubles where Grace Lorenzoni and Sarah Premo downed the Redettes’ Ali Diedrich and Emma Melchiori 6-3, 6-2.
“Marquette has a very tough team this year,” Flivvers coach Meagan Harrington said. “They will be a challenge in future matches.”
