NEWBERRY — The Newberry Indians ended a long district title drought on Wednesday night.

The Indians won their first title of that kind since 1998 after defeating St. Ignace 67-55. Alex Johnson led Newberry with 18 points, while John Paramski had 17 in the Class C tournament.

“They had about an eight-point lead on us at the half, but then we locked down on them defensively and controlled the ball well,” Newberry head coach Jim Depew said.

The Indians advance to the Class C regional tournament and open against the winner of Friday’s district final between Westwood and Iron Mountain.
