HARRIS — The Bark River-Harris boys’ basketball team went into attack mode Thursday and it paid off with a victory.

The Broncos attacked the basket, relied on balanced scoring and cruised to a 72-49 win against Superior Central.

Eight players scored and four reached double figures for the Broncos, who gradually pulled away after leading 38-25 at halftime.

“It was kind of methodical and we just wore them down,” said BR-H coach Jim VanEnkevort, whose team has won six of its last seven games. “Early on we settled for a few 3s. After that we started going to the hole. We pretty much did that the rest of the game. We attacked the basket.”

The Broncos (15-4, 10-2 Skyline Central) made 17 of 26 free throws, compared to 7 of 11 for the Cougars (3-17, 2-11), who lost their 13th straight.

Ryan Arndt led the Broncos with 15 points, followed by Ben Schultz with 14 points and Logan Heim and Allen LeBoeuf with 11 points apiece.

Senior Jace Briggs also grabbed 10 rebounds for BR-H.

SC coach Matt Rondeau wishes he had more than one senior, but his young team battled early. The Cougars trailed 15-12 after one quarter, but BR-H went on a 16-8 run late in the second quarter to take a 38-25 lead at halftime.

After the Cougars were plagued by 10 turnovers in the opening 16 minutes, BR-H opened up a 16-point lead in the third quarter.

Beau Rondeau led Superior Central with 14 points, while Luke Leppanen delivered 13 and Wade Krysiak added eight.

BR-H’s defense also limited Joe Heinonen.

“They shut Joe down and kept him to five (points),” Coach Rondeau said. “He’s a good spot-up shooter, a double-digit scorer, and they always had a hand in his face. They knew who to stop and they did.”

Early foul trouble also hurt the Cougars, who finished with 16 turnovers and shot 41 percent from the field.

“We had too many defensive mistakes on our part,” Matt Rondeau said. “They are putting constant pressure at the hoop. We are young and they are just young mistakes.

“Bark River doesn’t make many mistakes and they don’t turn the ball over. If they don’t make mistakes, they can be there with anybody.”

BR-H shot 38 percent from the field and had eight turnovers.

The Broncos, who won the JV game 66-29, will host unbeaten two-time defending state champion North Central Saturday in a makeup game.

Superior Central goes home to play Mid Peninsula on Monday in a Class D district semifinal.
