Superior Central girls get defensive

COOKS — The Superior Central girls put the clamps down on defense, overcoming a challenging offensive night to post a 36-27 high school basketball victory at Big Bay de Noc on Thursday night.

“Our defense played much better than we did Monday against North Dickinson (a 59-55 loss),” SC coach Greg Trowbridge said. “We started with a man (defense) and I was really happy with how (junior) Tori Tyner worked on Brooke Dalgord.

“We put pressure on her whenever we could.”

That limited Big Bay’s top offensive weapon to eight points, still tops on her team.

For the Cougars, junior Emma Rondeau was the only player to reach double-figures scoring for either team as she netted 15 points. Sophomore Sydney Emard added nine points.

SC (7-7 overall, 4-7 Skyline Central) led 13-6 after one quarter, extending it to 23-9 by halftime.

The Black Bears started getting closer early in the fourth quarter when Trowbridge ordered a slowdown by his team.

“We’d had a hard time putting the ball in the hoop all night,” he said, “so we slowed the game with about five minutes to go. They had to foul us several times, but we missed the front end of a 1-and-1 at least twice before we got to 10 fouls (and the double bonus).

“We made a couple after that.”

The Cougars, who also won the JV game, host Mid Peninsula on Monday.

St. Ignace 49, Newberry 40

At St. Ignace, Indians coach Fred Bryant felt his team did about all it could do with just seven players available against a traditional state power.

“Our kids really, really hustled,” he said. “They played a heckuva ball game.”

While all-stater Taylor Bryant had close to typical numbers with 15 pionts, 14 rebounds, six assists and five steals, Newberry (7-6, 3-3 Straits Area) missed its only other senior, No. 2 guard Megan Grigg.

“They were double and triple teaming Taylor,” Fred Bryant said. “And we’re a young team with a freshman and three sophomores out there.”

Taylor’s freshman sister, Makenna Bryant, added 11 points whle Emily Coveyou paced St. Ignace with 14.

The Indians actually led 15-13 after one quarter and 26-23 at halftime before they ran out of gas, falling behind 38-34 by the end of the third quarter.

The Saints also won the JV game 61-30. Next up for Newberry is a game at Eastern U.P. Conference rival Pickford on Tuesday.
