Munising draws tough assignment

MUNISING — The Upper Peninsula’s lone representative in the MHSAA state team wrestling finals will have an uphill battle on its hands this weekend.

Despite a 22-3 record, Munising was pegged as the No. 8 seed out of eight Division 4 schools competing at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant on Friday afternoon.

That means Munising will open against the team chosen as the No. 1 seed, Hudson (16-9), at noon Friday at CMU’s McGuirk Arena.

All 32 teams across four divisions that qualified for the finals will compete at CMU, so they will take part in just one match on the opening day of their single-elimination tourneys.

If the Mustangs get by Hudson, they will wrestle in the semifinals at 9 a.m. Saturday against the winner of Friday’s match between No. 4 Bronson (30-8) and No. 5 Springport (17-3).

The championship round is set for 3:30 p.m. Saturday and involves the survivor from Munising’s side of the bracket against either No. 2 Leroy Pine River (30-4), No. 3 Carson City-Crystal (29-8), No. 6 New Lothrop (14-8) or No. 7 Clinton (28-7).
