IRONWOOD — Only one of the half-dozen area teams changed positions in this week’s Upper Peninsula high school basketball polls released today by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

That team was the Baraga girls (12-2), who won both their games last week to move from fourth to second in Class D.

The Vikings, however, weren’t able to make a dent in Forest Park’s stranglehold as the unanimous No. 1 team in the voting, however.

Voting was conducted before the Marquette girls’ game against Houghton Monday, when the No. 1 Gremlins (16-0) in Class ABC prevailed over the No. 4 Redettes in double overtime, 46-40.

Those teams held their spots from the previous week, as did No. 2 Munising (14-0) and Ishpeming (12-2), which continued to miss the top five by a single vote.

On the boys side, Marquette remained No. 2 in Class ABC, though the Redmen secured a first-place vote after Norway (13-0) had been a unanimous No. 1 for several weeks. The Knights still received the other six first-place votes.

And Negaunee (10-3) remained two votes out of re-entering the top five after its three-game losing streak to the top three ABC teams in January.

In state Associated Press polls also released today, Munising moved up from ninth to seventh this week in Class C, while Baraga rose from a tie for eighth to seventh in Class D.

In Class A, Marquette remained outside the top 10 but improved slightly from missing by 10 votes to now coming up nine votes shy.

No area teams are mentioned in the boys AP polls.

There are two games tonight involving a U.P. ranked team from the area going up against another ranked team — the Class ABC No. 2 Munising girls host Class D No. 1 Forest Park, while the Class ABC No. 2 Marquette boys entertain Class ABC No. 4 Gladstone.

Similar matchups later this week include the Class ABC No. 6 Ishpeming girls hosting Class ABC No. 3 Norway on Thursday, and the Class D No. 2 Baraga girls playing at Class D No. 7 Ewen-Trout Creek on Monday.
