Ishpeming council violates charter

To the Journal editor: The city of Ishpeming is in violation of the Ishpeming City Charter. The Charter states, Vacancies in Elective Office: Section 2.17 (a) A vacancy occurring on the Council or any elective City office shall be filled within thirty (30) days by a majority vote of the remaining Council members, and the appointee to hold office until the second Monday following the next regular election, or until the successor shall qualify, provided that no such appointment shall be made within (90) days prior to any regular election. Federal workers badly needed

To the Journal editor: During the month of May approximately 161 million people were employed nationwide (Bureau of Labor and Statistics). Of those employed, less than 2 percent were civilian federal government employees (not counting contractors or grant positions), down from May 1992 when there were over 3 million federal employees under President George W. H. Bush (F.R.E.D). During that 31 year period, the number of federal employees shrunk in size while the U.S. population increased by 80 million people. To the Journal editor: Mr. Gene Miller, U.S. Navy veteran, is apparently unaware that in 1999 Congress designated May as Military Appreciation Month and that in 1996 the Armed Services YMCA designated November as National Veteran and Military Families Month. Veterans (Armistice) Day, a federal holiday, is Nov. 11. POW-MIA Day is the third Friday in September. Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May. First Amendment must prevail

To the Journal editor: On May 23, the culture wars came to Marquette in the form of a request to remove a book on LGBTQIA themes in the Young Adult collection at Peter White Public Library. The request had gone through the full process of review by the Library staff and a vote of the Board not to remove the book. The patron appealed which meant the request went to a public session of the library board. That evening, not one person from the public spoke in favor of removing the book. To the Journal editor: In the June 30 issue, The Mining Journal printed an article entitled “Crops stressed as central U.S. deals with drought.” This article mentioned the frequency and intensity of significant droughts and heavy rainfall events was increasing due to the burning of fossil fuels and other human activities that release heat-trapping greenhouse gases.
