Letters To The Editor

Coverage enjoyed

To the Journal editor: Thanks to Houghton Daily Mining Gazette sports writer Daver Karnosky for the great coverage of the Negaunee/Marquette Little League Minors baseball matchup this week in District 11, and to The Mining Journal for printing the story. The Marquette 10-11-year-olds played hard and never really let up all week. The three wins and a loss led them to playing Negaunee in the end, which is what they expected. Unfortunately, their bats weren’t aware how important it was to the kids and that was the determining factor when they met for the final game Thursday ...

All you need is love

To the Journal editor: Watching this current political scene is so painful. I believe that people on all sides of the issues want the same basic thing, to live in a stable, fair country whose government has the best interests of its citizens guiding their governing. And it is also obvious as I try to track down what is “truth” that neither side is averse to slanting, taking things out of context or even out-and-out lying. So, how the hell do I vote wisely? I know that when I act out of fear (and there is so much fear-mongering going on) I never make a wise choice. It always ...

Laments trail loss

To the Journal editor: I was mountain biking on the South Trails last weekend when I saw that one of my favorite trails, Two Stroke, was closed. I hoped that this was just a temporary closure, but, sadly, the trail is to be permanently closed. The forest that the trail once ran through is to be cleared for development off M-553. I mourn the trail and the forest that is no longer there. I am pro-development but anti-sprawl. The development along the highway is sprawl. The community master plan lists cherishing our natural assets as a guiding principal, but it is hard to reconcile ...

Meaning what you say

To the Journal editor: Trump said: “ [It] will be fixed, it will be fine. You won’t have to vote anymore. In four years, you won’t have to vote again.” GOP Gov. Chris Sununu says, “I think he was just trying to make the point that this stuff can be fixed. Obviously, we want everybody to vote in all elections, but I think he was just trying to make a hyperbolic point that it can be fixed if he gets back into office and all that. GOP U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton says, ...

No turning back clock

To the Journal editor; In 2022, Michigan voters passed Proposal 3 by an overwhelming 583,476 vote margin, putting women’s freedom to make personal reproductive healthcare decisions into the Michigan constitution. If you think that settled the issue in Michigan, you are wrong! Former president Trump brags that he appointed the Supreme Court judges that took away women’s freedom to make their own private reproductive decisions, a right that was theirs for the previous 50 years! Our current congressional representative, Jack Bergman, has voted for the 2021 Heartbeat Protection Act ...

Political allegory

To the Journal editor; What is happening in the world today and what is our part in shaping it? Versions of this question were asked of me by my high school history teacher and college professor in the 1970’s. My high school teacher posed the question to the class while discussing disinformation’s negative impact to mankind since recorded history. He believed future technology will make it extremely difficult for future generations to determine the truth, and it will be vital for us to listen to each other, question each other, and reason with each other to arrive at the ...
