Loving my neighbor is easier now

"Loving my neigbor is easier now" are the words of Geoff Duncan, the charismatic and popular former Republican lieutenant governor of Georgia, to formally announce in a recent op-ed in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he left the Republican Party and has joined the Democratic Party. I applaud his decision, a decision based on the Christian value of loving thy neighbor as thy self. Geoff Duncan, a devout husband, father and evangelical Christian, said in his op-ed, "My decision was centered around my daily struggle to love my neighbor, as a Republican. The moral imperative to 'love ...

Veggies and herbs impress

Many thanks to the Marquette Downtown Development Authority for their innovative and inviting herb and vegetable planters along West Washington Street. What a delightful way to provide both beauty and “good taste” to our downtown! Residents and tourists alike can relish this “at home” touch. I just finished a fresh fruit and vegetable salad garnished with a few sprigs of parsley and mint and adorned with a beautiful nasturtium flower plucked from the planter outside The Mining Journal office. I certainly hope this becomes an annual smorgasbord served up by the DDA in downtown ...

Gazans live in inhuman conditions

After a year and eight months of continuous bombing in Gaza, neighborhoods have been completely destroyed, including hospitals, schools and universities. The civilians of Gaza have been forced to flee repeatedly to escape relentless bomb attacks. Months ago, the only source of clean water was cut from Gaza, and food aid trucks were denied passage to reach hungry people. The Israeli government set up four distribution centers to hand out food for roughly two million remaining Gazans. No sensible measures for crowd control were put in place to prevent chaos. Instead, soldiers manning ...

Boorish behavior unacceptable

During the recent Fourth of July parade in Marquette, Republican state Rep. Karl Bohnak and state Sen. Ed McBroom were subjected to grossly inappropriate and vulgar taunting in the presence of many children.   There were certainly those who thanked them and those who demonstrated displeasure — part of our important free speech rights. But a number of citizens were heard swearing at the legislators, even attempting to engage them in arguments in the streets — about federal issues, no less, for which they have no participation. I know these gentlemen to be frequently available ...

‘Diet’ a killer for America

The kind of “diet” supported by the writer of the “Put it on a Diet” in a July 19 Mining Journal letter to the editor is akin to throwing an entire family in jail because one of them broke the law. The Trump/Department of Government Efficiency cuts to government agencies and programs are an enforced starvation that will lead to unnecessary early deaths of many honest, hard-working, struggling American citizens. This is not a diet. It is outright federal government-sanctioned murder by denial of necessary services. For a President of the United States who professes belief in ...
