Put it on a diet

There is much lip service about reducing waste, over staffing and redundancy. When any federal program is cut or reduced, many always make the excuses to keep it, no matter how abusive or non-vital. We’re supposedly unable to live properly without them and the mass of taxes to fund them. Those deeply reduce funds for many personal needs and private aid efforts. We have swollen, unelected bureaucracies that make rules with the force of law, with their own unelected courts. That does not mean there are not any bureaucrats needed to do some useful work. Federal programs are touted as the ...

It’s up to us

As I write this, it’s again to help us not to let the world changing events get us depressed. With climate change still going on and our leaders in Washington, D.C., still not getting along, we must not watch too much news but get out and enjoy our summer days. There are places to go where we still have clean, lakes, rivers and the beauty of nature. A quiet environment helps us to rest our minds. I’m still hopeful that we, the people, can still try to help each other and hope for family and friends to support us. Years ago, when our country was the beginning of our U.S.A., it was ...

Small plastics pose big threat

Despite loads of data on the dangers of microplastics, they are still not regulated. They are everywhere. Literally. They have been found in plants, animals, water and human tissue and blood. Even in umbilical cords! They pose a huge public health risk causing myriad of health problems. The first step in addressing this threat is monitoring microplastics, particularly in our water. As the governor of the Great Lakes state, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer ha an important role to play. I believe she should be the first to petition the EPA to monitor microplastics. If six other governors follow her ...

Were our framers neurologists?

Following thoughts were spurred by recent political discussions I’ve had with friends, family, and people from other countries, where many stated … “America has lost its mind!”. I started to look at our American Experiment through a new lens. Was it an attempt to create a governing system paralleling a well-functioning human brain with safe guards to protect against dysfunction? The U.S. Constitution might be viewed as clinical insight into the human condition, the human psyche. Did our Framers’ understand neurology/psychology? Hold that thought. Per 2022 NIH report ...

United we stand?

Inspiring, patriotic and unifying were the words to describe the July 4th Independence Parades in Marquette and Ishpeming. The theme of the Marquette parade was “United We Stand” which dramatized the need to promote unity and respect out of the division and hate we see in America today. One float offered by Indivisible and Yoopers Unite really captured the theme with a huge sign and banner that said, “United We Stand.” But back in the nation’s capital on July 4th, all of this was bittersweet, as the president signed into law the so-called big budget reconciliation bill that ...

Copperwood facts cited

Copperwood Project brings hope for families in the U.P. Families like mine, who have lived in Wakefield for generations, remember how our community used to thrive. We remember the jobs and industries that once had a place in the Upper Peninsula. We know mining is a big part of our history and culture. I encourage you to spend a few hours at the Wakefield Historical Society and Museum. We don’t have a ton of jobs or industry and many of our small businesses are struggling to stay afloat because of the shrinking population. Even our high schools are feeling the impact as graduation ...
