Bad idea, bad policy

State Rep. Greg Markkanen, R-Hancock, who represents the 110th District, recently introduced House Resolution 151 urging the federal government to purchase the former Ojibway Correctional Facility in Gogebic County. Markkanen suggests the federal government could turn the facility into a detention and deportation center for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, like the notorious “Alligator Alcatraz” erected in Florida earlier this year for the same purposes. The Michigan Department of Corrections closed the Ojibway Correctional Facility in 2018. The Michigan Department of ...

Witnessing hypocrisy

I just finished reading Clarence Page's (column) in The Mining Journal on Aug. 19 (Tuesday). In it, he tells of a man that was arrested in Washington, D.C. because he "forcefully threw" a wrapped hoagie at a Customs and Border Protection officer. He was arrested and charged with "assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers and employees of the United States." After the incident, our attorney general, Pam Bondi, stated, "If you touch any law enforcement officer, we will come after you." Really, Pam? Really? If you recall, on Jan. 6, 2021 at least 174 law enforcement offices in ...

Blight cited

To the Journal editor: I am concerned about the eyesore on Lakeshore (Boulevard), the old Coco‘s restaurant site. The grass is hip high. The outside of the building is surrounded with growing weeds, part of the old signage still exists and often a boat and vehicle are parked on the property. It all looks unkept and quite awful. Lakeshore (Boulevard) is heavily traveled by locals and tourists. Should we have to look at this blight? Can anything be done to make this area presentable?

Criticism misses mark

To the Journal editor: Our granddaughter enjoyed watching Ms. Rachel's educational video for toddlers and preschoolers. So I was amazed to hear that Ms. Rachel was the target of hateful criticism for saying publicly that killing and starving children in Gaza is wrong. First of all, who could get that angry with someone who makes videos, teaching toddlers and cows say "moo?" Second, she is giving aid and comfort to Hamas? Really? I suspect that every news report about bombing a hospital or gunning down hungry families as they run toward aid trucks is the best recruiting tool Hamas ever ...

Founders’ political party warning

Our Founders warn us about political party influence on its citizens, but hoped our system of checks and balances would mitigate destabilizing effects. Hold that thought. Back four decades ago, generally speaking, if you were a conservative Republican you voted to protect individual rights, for accountability both finically and morally, and work towards a Federal government playing a smaller role in state and local governments. If you were a progressive Democrat, you voted to protect individual rights and for legislation at Federal and State levels to provide a moral safety net to help ...

Loving my neighbor is easier now

"Loving my neigbor is easier now" are the words of Geoff Duncan, the charismatic and popular former Republican lieutenant governor of Georgia, to formally announce in a recent op-ed in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he left the Republican Party and has joined the Democratic Party. I applaud his decision, a decision based on the Christian value of loving thy neighbor as thy self. Geoff Duncan, a devout husband, father and evangelical Christian, said in his op-ed, "My decision was centered around my daily struggle to love my neighbor, as a Republican. The moral imperative to 'love ...
