We’ve done nothing

No sooner has the new school year begun and we just had yet another school shooting. This time, the city of Minneapolis suffered the horror of a gunman who attacked children at a Catholic school. Two children ages eight and 10 years were killed as they sat in a church pew praying. Several other children and three adult adults were also injured. Several were critically injured. And all of the surviving children will be traumatized for the rest of their lives after witnessing this horrific event. School should be a place of safety, not terror. Two families will now have to bury their ...

Reason needed

Almost 3,000 American lives were lost in the Sept. 11 attack. During our response to the attack, around 15,000 American troop and contractor lives were lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since 9/11, there have been over 258,000 gun homicides in the U.S. Not all victims were gang members or criminals. Tens-of-thousands of them were innocent, decent men, women, and children (https://bjs.ojp.gov/content/pub/pdf/fv9311.pdf and https://www.statista.com/statistics/249803/). It is a grotesque statistic! Across the nation, some 30 people died after being shot on September 10, 2025. They included: ...

Palestinians and the Israelis need to talk

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said recently that Hamas must have “no role” in governing Gaza in the future and called on the militant group to hand over its weapons to the Palestinian authority. He added “What we want is one unified state without weapons, a state with one law and one legitimate security forces,” he said. Where things stand now make it difficult to predict anything. However, in an “all things considered” approach, the Palestinians are globally more supported now than any time before. However, The US remains opposed to the recognition of ...

Line 5 concerns voiced

I'm writing with concerns of the future of Endbridge's Line 5 and the continued delays in coming to a decision on what will be done. With the current line being over 70 years old, the chances for a line rupture increases, with Endbridge making note of structural concerns 11 years ago. It appears the safety history of the current line has been almost flawless, while Enbridge continues to monitor its condition to prevent a spill.  The question I have is who will be responsible if there is a future rupture of the current line, taking into consideration all these court battles and ...

Who do we strive to become?

I flipped back though America’s story to our official start on July 4th, 1776. I re-read the grievances written in The Declaration of Independence our Thirteen States had against the king of Britain. The majority of immigrants to the New World saw an opportunity to become free individuals, free to practice religion they saw fit. To create agreed upon rules for a civil society, instead of subjected to rules set by the king. But not everyone wanted to leave King’s rule. In less than a year, we will celebrate our 250th anniversary, but what is the essence of the American experience ...

Petitions don’t tell full story

To the Journal editor: Your right to vote is being attacked. Right now, petitions are being circulated to get a proposed amendment on the ballot in 2026 that would disenfranchise tens of thousands of eligible Michigan voters, all in the name of keeping non-citizens from voting. They already don’t. Seriously, about 15 votes per major election are fraudulent. Of course, the circulators are not telling you this. They say, “This is to make sure you have to show a photo ID to vote. And if you don’t have one, we’ll pay for it!” How kind. Unfortunately, they are skipping some ...
