Direction worries Walker

I served as Marquette County prosecutor for 38 years. I also acted in the role as special assistant U.S. attorney for the Western District of Michigan. The actions of Trump and his lackeys sickens me and fills me with fear for the rule of law and questions as to whether our democracy will survive. Robert Jackson, United States attorney general, addressed an assembly of all the United States attorneys. In his remarks, he noted the following: "The prosecutor at his best is one of the most beneficent forces in our society; when he acts from malice or other base motives, he is one of the ...

Mid terms beckon

To the Journal editor: The citizens of the Upper Peninsula and our whole country should be aware that the mid-term elections of 2026 are in grave danger. Trump has hired thousands of new national guard personnel to illegally police peaceful cities of his own choosing. He wants to claim insurrection where there is none. Our democracy and history of the promise of freedom are being threatened in a way most of us never thought possible. Every citizen should ask themself what they can do to prevent this catastrophe and tragedy from happening to our country. Now is the time for great ...

How bad will it get?

Every evening, after watching the news or reading the paper, I think, 'Thank goodness this day is over... things can't possibly get worse tomorrow.' Every day I'm shocked that things do get worse. The most recent incident that has me shaken is the raid in Chicago. At 1 a.m. on Oct. 2, FBI, ATF and border patrol agents rappelled from Blackhawk helicopters to the roof of an apartment building. Using flash-bang grenades they broke down the doors of the residents, pulled them from their homes and zip tied them (some were naked), leaving them outside for hours. Children were also rounded up ...

Voices to be raised

Have you been feeling concerned about reduced benefits for veterans, the possible closure of rural hospitals, expected insurance premium increases in January, having the military deployed against U.S. cities, the lack of due process, and infringements on freedom of speech? I know I am concerned. I remember a time when people could disagree about politics or cultural and social norms without thinking ‘the other side’ is evil. I yearn for a return to civility, so we can all be in a community where we might not agree, but where we treat each other respectfully. In July a bill was ...

Government needs work

To the Journal editor: A recent writer’s claim, I think, “All federal aid recipients are defrauds,” is false. … Still, so far, the DOGE has found serious program fraud. Just Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, have over 20 million defrauders. These programs need. … federal checking. DOGE has not been around long enough to find amounts that other groups have. The Heritage Foundation has found $6.7 trillion spent on wasteful programs and unaccountable, unelected bureaucrats in 2024. It isn’t just a few bad apples. The average family was must now pay $4,500 more to the ...

Columnists miss mark

To the Journal editor: A recent letter to the editor describes columnists Cal Thomas, Rich Lowry, Michael Barone and John Stossel as journalists who attempt to be objective, unbiased and fact based. After a very good laughing fit, this letter follows. These so-called journalists can’t hold the candle to Walter Cronkite, who was a man of integrity, unlike those cited by the writer. Rich Lowry, for example, decried socialism by giving examples of communist dictatorships, which is disingenuous as Sweden, Norway and other European countries are socialist within the accepted meaning of ...
