Letter to the Editor: Gazans live in inhuman conditions

After a year and eight months of continuous bombing in Gaza, neighborhoods have been completely destroyed, including hospitals, schools and universities. The civilians of Gaza have been forced to flee repeatedly to escape relentless bomb attacks. Months ago, the only source of clean water was cut from Gaza, and food aid trucks were denied passage to reach hungry people. The Israeli government set up four distribution centers to hand out food for roughly two million remaining Gazans. No sensible measures for crowd control were put in place to prevent chaos. Boorish behavior unacceptable

During the recent Fourth of July parade in Marquette, Republican state Rep. Karl Bohnak and state Sen. Ed McBroom were subjected to grossly inappropriate and vulgar taunting in the presence of many children.   There were certainly those who thanked them and those who demonstrated displeasure — part of our important free speech rights. But a number of citizens were heard swearing at the legislators, even attempting to engage them in arguments in the streets — about federal issues, no less, for which they have no participation. ‘Diet’ a killer for America

The kind of “diet” supported by the writer of the “Put it on a Diet” in a July 19 Mining Journal letter to the editor is akin to throwing an entire family in jail because one of them broke the law. The Trump/Department of Government Efficiency cuts to government agencies and programs are an enforced starvation that will lead to unnecessary early deaths of many honest, hard-working, struggling American citizens. Put it on a diet

There is much lip service about reducing waste, over staffing and redundancy. When any federal program is cut or reduced, many always make the excuses to keep it, no matter how abusive or non-vital. We’re supposedly unable to live properly without them and the mass of taxes to fund them. Those deeply reduce funds for many personal needs and private aid efforts. We have swollen, unelected bureaucracies that make rules with the force of law, with their own unelected courts. That does not mean there are not any bureaucrats needed to do some useful work. It’s up to us

As I write this, it’s again to help us not to let the world changing events get us depressed. With climate change still going on and our leaders in Washington, D.C., still not getting along, we must not watch too much news but get out and enjoy our summer days. There are places to go where we still have clean, lakes, rivers and the beauty of nature. A quiet environment helps us to rest our minds. Small plastics pose big threat

Despite loads of data on the dangers of microplastics, they are still not regulated. They are everywhere. Literally. They have been found in plants, animals, water and human tissue and blood. Even in umbilical cords! They pose a huge public health risk causing myriad of health problems. The first step in addressing this threat is monitoring microplastics, particularly in our water. As the governor of the Great Lakes state, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer ha an important role to play. I believe she should be the first to petition the EPA to monitor microplastics.
