Correspondent will be missed

To the Journal editor:

The “Letter to the Editor” represents a distinct voice in society. It takes real courage and good writing skills to convey the right message to the public. Overall, it is not an easy task to say something in so few words. Many people lack the skills to express themselves; others do it with no effort.

William P. Maki was one of those distinct voices of Upper Michigan. A deeply religious man, he wrote countless editorial contributions to The Mining Journal over the years before his untimely passing on Nov. 13 at the age of 85. Maybe you had the pleasure of reading one of his pieces? In these pieces, he instructed us on how to put technology aside and focus on daily life. He stressed the importance of taking it easy and seeking the Lord’s guidance. He also emphasized that family was the most important factor in achieving happiness. His general observations were honest, truthful and moving. Yes, this was William’s way of communicating his message to the world, and he had reached an audience that listened and cared about him.

William P. Maki is to be remembered today for his act of courage. It takes courage to open your heart and tell the truth. He gave everything of himself to his audience. As his nephew, I’m in awe of the man and his legacy. Each voice, you see, brings forth a lifetime’s worth of experiences. And if you shape those experiences into words and share them with others, it makes a better world for all.

I’m aware that some of you will truly miss my uncle’s perspective. But let it be known that, in the twilight of his life, William P. Maki has reached, once and for all, those heavenly gates he dreamed about and that he is as eager as ever to explore eternity with pen in hand. I can see it now. He is shaking God’s hand. Offering him advice. Asking for the truth. Relentless. You see, he’s a master communicator wherever he goes. That’s his real legacy, and I love him for that.
