To the Journal editor: I had the privilege recently of attending the Marquette Sentinels football team versus the Gaylord Blue Devils at Gaylord’s high school stadium.  It was an unforgettable game for several reasons, one of which was witnessing a highly competitive football game where there were no losers. The final score in the second overtime was Gaylord 28, Marquette 27. Gaylord prevented a fourth down Marquette winning score from the 2-yard line by about an inch from the goal line when the Sentinels’ runner was forced out of bounds with 6 seconds remaining on the game ...

Two-party system obsolete?

Those who say the two-party system is simply obsolete are ignoring the facts that we need a healthy government and opposition. The two-party system provides the pillars of ‘government’ and ‘opposition.’ Similarly, just as there are three branches of government that each check each other. There are two parties checking each other from positions of power or opposition. Though, there can be gross abuses of this arrangement (e.g., investigating political enemies, the Jan. 6th insurrection). Where are the town halls?

Dear the Journal editor: (It's) very interesting that U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman, R-Watersmeet, will be at Belgiumtown in Stephenson on Sept. 27 for a fundraiser. Bergman has visited the Upper Peninsula on numerous occasions in the past months for fundraising and meet-and-greets. How many town halls has he shown up for? The last town hall Bergman held with us in the U.P., his constituents, was in 2017. Why would you support someone who doesn’t listen to you?

When will we ever learn?

To the Journal editor: This refrain echos in my head often these days as we hear of gun violence way too often in our country. I am reminded of an anti-war song written by Pete Seeger and sung by Peter, Paul and Mary, that was popular during the 60s. “Where Have All The Flowers Gone” is a poignant folk song about war and violence and its impact on individuals and societies. Each verse ends with the phrase, “When will we ever learn?” In our country today, we have more guns than people. Many fail to see

To the Journal editor: In our nation's history, we have occasionally had presidents who were deceitful, ineffective, incompetent or corrupt. Donald Trump is not unique in those regards, though he certainly raises all of these character failings to previously unheard of levels. It is truly unfortunate that so many people failed to see, or refused to acknowledge, the myriad flaws and the person for whom they voted. This situation is indeed a tragedy, which evolves daily and actual and potential dangers to our country, the true peril actually lies elsewhere. I continue to marvel at the ...
