Looking forward

To the Journal editor: More good news as we now are into September. Weather wise, we should have less humid days and cooler temperatures. We still have some smoke to deal with, but hopefully it won’t be as bad. As for the news, I hope to get some good news. Have to hope our so-called leaders in Washington, D.C., will try to think of us people and not themselves. When I’m out and talking to most people, they say they are not watching news much but for those who like football and baseball, it’s still nice to watch the games. Publication lauded

To the Journal editor: The Mining Journal is to be commended for its selection of syndicated columnists. There is something for every reader which is difficult to provide in our politically charged atmosphere. I especially appreciate the journalists who attempt to be objective, unbiased and fact-based. My personal favorites are Cal Thomas, Rich Lowery, Michael Barrone and John Stossel. Rather than every article being partisan, they attempt to let the facts speak for themselves and praise or criticize accordingly. Legion auxiliary thanks volunteers

To the Journal editor: A big thank you to all of our volunteers who put in hours of their time to help keep our programs running, from Poppy Days, the annual rummage sale, veterans baskets, crockpots, the Jacobetti Gift Shop, ladies night, Wreaths Across America, Christmas cookie shop and Memorial Day wreaths. We are so lucky to live in a community where we have dedicated volunteers. Of course, our community came out and supported us with so many generous donations. Thank you again to our volunteers and community. We truly live in someplace special.

Dorms will create problems for wildlife

Northern Michigan University's new dorms will destroy habitat and cause more traffic accidents. The field in front of the Cohodas building is home to numerous wildlife species including the albino deer. People use the area to recreate and play with their dogs. That section of road with the round about is already a hazard and putting two big dorms on either side of the road is going to create more traffic accidents. People crash over the sign in the median by Subway on a routine basis. People speed down that straight away and the area is already problematic for pedestrian ...

Call it incompetence

Americans on both sides of the aisle are realizing that the current POTUS is both incompetent and indecisive. Because of his disorder, he is incapable of understanding nuance and lacks empathy. Back in the late 80s and early 90s, Republicans accused Democrats of being flip-floppers. Ironically, they now have the greatest flipper in U.S. history sitting in the Oval Office. He can’t decide on anything. His executive orders have been easy to issue. About 39% are being challenged in court as illegal or unconstitutional. The FBI considers violent crime to include murder, manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault. In their Uniform Crime Report, the FBI maintains an annual violent crime tally by state, city and population. The UCR for 2019 seemed to be the most recent, fully available report online. The city of Marquette, with a population of 20,599, was listed with 26 violent crimes for 2019. Comparably, Bristol, CT, with a population of 59,977 people, listed 53 violent crimes for that same year. In an effort to compare apples to apples, I came up with an average of 1.2 violent ...
