Backing Lorinser

To the Journal editor:

U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman is way out of step from folks in the Upper Peninsula. In July, he voted against the Right to Contraception Act (House Resolution 8373). He would not protect your right to use sterilization, condoms, etc.

Bergman, R-Watersmeet, had not previously informed Yoopers about his opposition to all methods of birth control. His website is silent about it. Related Google searches reveal nothing.

Learn more about his opposition to birth control at the six U.P. Women’s Marches on Oct. 8.

Last June, a reporter asked U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., “Justice Clarence Thomas wants to revisit the Supreme Court’s earlier decisions on … contraceptives. What do you think of that?” McCarthy responded “The Supreme Court is a separate branch of government. They can look at whatever comes before them.”

McCarthy refused to initiate legislation to protect your access to birth control. McCarthy prefers legislation by Supreme Court decisions. Then in July, the House passed the Right to Contraception Act along party lines.

Whether birth control becomes forbidden by legislation or a court decision, Jack’s intentions (appear) clear. He wants government to snoop into your private life, mock the sanctity of your marriage, forbid your family planning decisions, trample on your personal liberties and gut your constitutionally guaranteed freedoms.

If Jack’s plan works, many U.P. families will have more “surprise babies.”

(It appears) Jack’s biggest fear before the Nov. 8 election is that voters will learn the Republican Party is against birth control. I cannot take those risks. Can you? Please don’t bring Jack back. Instead, vote for Bob Lorinser, MD.
