Electric vehicles are coming

To the Journal editor:

We, of the Climate Reality Project, want to encourage the city, the county, the Marquette Downtown Development Authority, our wonderful health care operators and the regional business community to really look at the potential value of implementing electric vehicle charging stations as widely as possible, wherever visitors and patrons are likely to spend more than an hour.

EVs are here now, and are now in driving range (250 miles or more) of even Upper Peninsula destinations from regional population centers for the latest models. Frankly, we want the people who drive EVs to come up here, to enjoy our resources and to spend money here.

Having a solid network of EV Level 3 charging stations at movies, restaurants, motels, the hospital and shopping areas would be a powerful incentive to put us on the travel planning maps of EV owners throughout the Midwest.

Speaking for myself, I’d make use of charging stations, on a fee basis, at Escanaba, in Menominee (near La Cabana!), in Marinette (parking lot behind Blue Bike!) when traveling to Green Bay.

And, reversing that, visitors from Green Bay, Appleton and points south would find us in basic cruising/recharging range. Similarly visitors from Minneapolis, Duluth/Superior and Ashland would find us in reach via charging stations along U.S 2 and M-28.

Let’s get ahead of this curve! Tesla is installing a nationwide network; Electrify America is national already for other brands. It’s money-making for them. Us too, if we can get this ball rolling.

Also a great way to get us off the fossil fuel kick. Let’s do this!
