Worries about Cliffs

To the Journal editor:

I am astounded that I have not read any comments in The Mining Journal by staff or readers of the Journal concerning the recent happenings at … Cliffs (Natural Resources).

A New York-based hedge fund buys 5.2 percent of Cliffs stock, then manages to put six people on the board of 11 directors, who then fire the top three management people at Cliffs and replace them with one man whose instructions are to increase shareholder value.

No mention of long-range plans, well being of loyal employees or the impact that board decisions will have on the people living in the affected area. Increased shareholder value. Nothing else matters.

We are a mining community. We have been blessed to have Cliffs running our single biggest company. Their management philosophy has always taken into account the welfare of the community and its people.

I hate to see the philosophy change to one of money, money, money with no regard for the community or its people.
