Deborah Bengry

BARAGA, MI-Deborah Lynn Bengry, age 73, of Baraga, Michigan, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, June 4th, 2025.

Deborah was born on November 21st, 1951, in L’Anse, Michigan, the daughter of George and Diane DeCota. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School in 1970 and went on to earn an Associate Degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1973, she married Kim Duane Bengry in Marquette; they later divorced.

Deborah dedicated more than 20 years of service to the Girl Scouts of America, retiring in 2002. After retirement, she moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin to be closer to her family, and in 2024, she returned to her hometown of Baraga.

A proud member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, Deborah was known as a pool shark, love of gaming, and skill in crafting beautiful dream catchers. Above all, she cherished time spent with her grandchildren and found great joy in spoiling them.

She is survived by her son Rick Bezhig of Green Bay; daughter Laurie (Tony) Joslin of Green Bay; mother Diane DeCota of Baraga; brothers Bobby DeCota of Baraga, George (Debbie) DeCota of Green Bay, Jon (Colleen) DeCota of Menasha, WI, and Roger (Emily) DeCota of Appleton; grandchildren Nickolas Bengry and Kage LePak of Green Bay; niece TamiLee DeCota of Appleton; and nephew Andrew DeCota of Green Bay.

Deborah was preceded in death by her parents, George and Lillian DeCota.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, June 11th, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. in the KBIC Senior Housing Community Room, 220 Main St, Baraga, MI.
