Robert Salvate
GWINN, MI – Robert (Bob) Salvate, 82, of Gwinn, died Thursday evening, June 28, 2018 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in the presence of his loving family and under the care of Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice.
Bob was born on May 4, 1936 at Brooklyn, New York, a son of the late John and Marion (Taylor) Salvate. He was a 20+ year veteran of the United States Air Force, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant and was involved in aircraft maintenance his entire career.
Following military service, Bob worked as store manager for TG&Y in California. He also worked in Saudi Arabia with the Northrop Corporation instructing the Royal Saudi Air Force in aircraft maintenance. He finally was employed as a civil servant at Edwards Air Force Base.
Bob was a member of Gwinn United Methodist Church as well as the Gwinn VFW post. In his free time he took great joy in volunteering for thousands of hours for many organizations including RSVP and Triad of Marquette County. In 2012 Robert was awarded the Marquette County Senior Volunteer of the Year award and in 2013, he was the proud recipient of the Upper Peninsula Volunteer of the Year award.
Bob is survived by his wife, Beverly of Gwinn; 3 children, Carl (Margaret) Aho and Robert (Cathy) Aho, both of Gwinn, and John (Tracy) Salvate of Apple Valley, CA; 10 grandchildren, Carl Aho III, Beverly Aho, Christopher Aho, Lisa Fine, Robert Aho, William Aho, Michelle Aho, Donald Aho, Brittany Salvate, and Amberly Petty; 21 great grandchildren; one brother, Jack Salvate of Chandler, AZ; also several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death besides his parents were two brothers, William and Richard Salvate.
Visitation will commence at 3:30 on Thursday, July 5th with a memorial service to be held at 5 p.m. in Gwinn United Methodist Church with Rev. Ron Fike officiating. A luncheon will be served in the church hall immediately following the service.
Graveside services with military honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #380 on Friday, July 6th at 10 a.m. in the Gwinn Cemetery.
