ESCANABA – Lutherans from across the Upper Peninsula, northern Wisconsin, and northern Lower Michigan will be gathering on Saturday at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Escanaba when the Northwoods Lutheran CORE will hold its regional theological conference and convocation.

All members, guests, and visitors are welcome.

Northwoods Lutheran CORE is a partner of Lutheran CORE (Coalition for Renewal). Lutheran CORE is a group of like-minded Lutherans who are seeking to be faithful to the gospel of Jesus Christ; the Holy Bible as the Word of God; and the tradition of family, as instituted by God Himself

The keynote speaker for the gathering in Escanaba will be the Rev. Paddy Rooney, STS, Senior of the Society of the Holy Trinity. The theme for the event is “The Bible, Mary, Luther, and the Church: A Lutheran Assessment on the Mother of our Lord.”

“In this season of Advent we are anticipating the birth of Jesus; Immanuel God with us. There is one person in our faith tradition who was also waiting with excited anticipation; Mary, the mother of our Lord. We are excited to have such a well-known theologian in the Lutheran community to share the importance Mary has within the church tradition and invite us to join with her in excited anticipation for the coming of our Savior; of Immanuel, God with us. The coming of Jesus,” said the Rev. David Johnson, pastor of Faith Lutheran Church in Ishpeming and Chairman of the Northwoods Lutheran CORE Steering Committee.

“Lutherans have been affiliating with CORE in large numbers to protest the decisions made at the Churchwide Assembly of the ELCA in 2009 to provide for the blessing of same-sex unions and the ordination of sexually active homosexuals. They are also looking to CORE to provide guidance in a time of great theological drift away from the historic principles of Christianity.”

In addition to the presentations, the CORE gathering will include two inspiring worship services. Rooney will be preaching during the closing worship service.

All are welcome to attend the Northwoods Lutheran CORE Convocation in Escanaba. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. and the event concludes at 6 p.m. A suggested donation of $25 will be accepted to cover lunch and materials. Checks can be made out to Northwoods CORE and mailed to Pastor Chris Johnson, Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1230 North 18th St., Escanaba, MI 49829.

More information about Lutheran CORE can be found at www.lutherancore.org.

Arts, culture events announced

MARQUETTE – The city of Marquette Arts and Culture Center announces its November/December LSAA Gallery exhibition by painter and printmaker, Bernie Park.

Park, a master of fine arts graduate from Michigan State University, developed a fascination for painting early on in life. Since relocating to Marquette County in 1998, Park has exhibited his work across the Upper Peninsula, most recently at the Great Lakes Show Case in Houghton, Michigan.

His exhibit will include paintings highly influenced by Tonalism, a late 19th century landscape movement, and will primarily be based on photographs taken in the Porcupine Mountains and Marquette County.

The December SmallWorks Gallery will feature photography by Corey Kelly. Kelly began her exploration of the world through a lens at the age of 15 when her grandfather gave her his Canon camera. While her light-heartedness and curiosity-filled blue eyes make her a clone of her grandfather, she embodies her mother’s word-loving and adventurous spirit.

Since graduating from Northern Michigan University in 2013, she has shared her love of photography with others through workshops and her participation in group shows. Her exhibit will feature photographs aiming to depict the story of small places.

The LSAA Gallery installation will be running now to Dec. 30 and the SmallWorks exhibit will be available for viewing from Dec. 1-30. There will be a combined artist reception from 6-8 p.m. Thursday featuring a pop-up art show put on by Northern Michigan University Outdoor Recreation students. The public is invited to attend and refreshments will be provided.

The arts and culture center is located in the lower level of the Peter White Public Library. For more information or questions, call 228-0472 or email arts-culture@mqtcty.org.
