One dead after ATV accident

MARINETTE, Wis. — A 53-year-old Neenah, Wis., man was killed Saturday afternoon when the all-terrain vehicle he was operating in the town of Stephenson entered the path of a dump truck on Caldron Falls Road near Camp Bird, said Marinette County Sheriff Jerome Sauve.

The victim, Michael J. Goffard, came around a corner southbound, lost control, and crossed the center line hitting the northbound dump truck, Sauve said. He was thrown from the ATV.

The crash was reported at 12:48 p.m. Saturday.

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources wardens and sheriff’s deputies were on scene within six minutes, but rescue and paramedic attempts to save Goffard were unsuccessful, the sheriff said.

The driver of the truck, from Port Washington, Wis., and his minor passenger were not injured.

Assisting deputies and wardens were the town of Stephenson Fire Department, Twin Bridge Rescue Squad, Bay Area Medical paramedics and the Marinette County Medical Examiners’s Office.

The crash remains under investigation by law enforcement and the medical examiner. This is the sixth traffic fatality in Marinette County in 2021, Sauve said.
