Operation Remove DeJoy

To the Journal editor:

(Recently) at the Dickinson County Board of County Commissioners I proposed a county-wide petition drive to flood the White House with petitions asking President Biden to remove Postmaster DeJoy from the post office board of governors.

While the president does not have the power to remove the postmaster directly from his position, the president can remove a governor from the post office board of governors.

I theorized that if the president removed DeJoy from the board of governors, then DeJoy would no longer be postmaster general.

This theory is based on the simple fact that the postmaster general must be chosen from among the post office board of governors. One cannot be postmaster general without sitting on the board of governors.

Under DeJoy’s leadership, the Upper Peninsula has lost next day mail delivery. Without next day mail delivery, there is no longer any way for water samples from the U.P. to be mailed in time to be tested.

According to USPS representative Lance Markly who spoke at the public input meeting on April 1 at Pine Mountain, “There is no longer next day mail delivery in any of the 50 states.” Without next day mail delivery, the mail will be delayed one day.

Further delays are in store for U.P. residents if the U.P. mail processing plant in Kingsford closes. With the closure of that plant, the mail will have to travel to Green Bay before it can be delivered in the U.P.

These are changes which were decided by DeJoy and our citizens were not given an opportunity to discuss how these changes would impact our lives and communities.

Mail processing plants are closing all across the United States in communities large and small. The postmaster general has just ordered that Reno’s mail will be processed in Sacramento. This means that mail trucks will have to not only drive 260 miles round trip but also must navigate through the notorious Donner Pass which is often closed during bad weather, further delaying Reno’s mail.

Ironically, the Donner Pass is named after a pioneer family who engaged in cannibalism after becoming trapped in during the winter of 1847. Reno locals know enough to keep away from that pass during bad weather but apparently postmaster DeJoy knows better. Well, aren’t we lucky?

In Atlanta, citizens have been dealing with mail problems for two years and the mega mail processing center in Atlanta has intensified these problems. During the Senate Hearing on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, Georgia’s U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff blasted the postmaster general for the chaos at the Atlanta processing mail facility which has resulted in citizens not getting important documents and medication.

U.S. postal workers and customers deserve a postmaster who actually knows basic American geography as well as how the post office operates. Louis DeJoy has little knowledge of either of those things.

With such ignorance, one does wonder if DeJoy could find his way out of the Donner Pass in a snowstorm or has the wisdom not to attempt such foolishness in the first place. The best generals never ask their men to risk life and limb unless they themselves are willing to stand shoulder to shoulder and do the task at hand.

America deserves a postmaster general who has actually worked in the post office and understands the inner workings of this unique American organization. So, while President Biden may not be able to remove a postmaster general, he can remove a governor from the board of governors and one of those governors is Louis DeJoy.

Hurry Mr. President before we have to endure some new horror Gov. DeJoy (AKA postmaster general DeJoy) has unleashed upon vulnerable Americans.
