30 years ago CHATHAM — Two college students who live thousands of miles away from each other met face-to-face recently after becoming acquainted months earlier on the Internet. Stuart Rutter, 19, of New Castle, England met Chatham’s Jana Eklund, 20, while surfing the net last November. The two have been cyberspace pen pals ever since. Using funds from a student loan and money his parents gave him as a birthday present, Rutter decided to visit North America to meet several friends he’d first contacted on the net. 30 years ago MARQUETTE — The Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum has received one pallet of Formica counter top material from Kellogg Wholesale Building Supply Company of Traverse City and the Formica Surell Company. The donated materials valued at $6,000 will be used on work surfaces and displays for several of the museums exhibits, according to David Bammert, UPCM assistant director. 30 years ago MARQUETTE — Marquette police officers investigating a bomb scare are seeking persons who were in the vicinity of Marquette County Road 550 and Wright Street early Thursday evening. Officials received a telephone call from a telephone booth at that location at about 6:55 p.m. Thursday. The caller said a bomb was in the Lakeview Arena, said Det. Capt. Hank Steede of the Marquette Police Department. “What they said, basically, is that there’s a bomb set to go off at Lakeview Arena,” said Steede. “We did a thorough search (of the arena) and found nothing.” ...

30 years ago KI SAWYER — After more than three decades assigned to Sawyer Air Force Base, most of it as a part of the Strategic Air Command, the 410th Bomb Wing retired its colors in a brief ceremony here Tuesday morning and said goodbye to the officer who served as its final commander. As a B-52H passed overhead, outgoing wing commander Col. 30 years ago CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP – Guy Wallace, 13, of Harvey, displayed a rare copy of “Trout Madness,” one of the late John Voelker’s most popular books about trout fishing. Wallace received the book from Voelker’s grandson, John Overturf of Marquette, along with a membership in the John Voelker Foundation. The book is one of only 300 published since Voelker’s death using his real name instead of his pen name, Robert Traver. Hosken, editor of Cornish World, and Judy Locy, Cornish World North American correspondent, said Monday.
