30 years ago MARQUETTE — Beginning Tuesday, traffic signals will be installed or changed at four locations in Marquette. New signals will be installed on westbound U.S. Highway 41 at the Kmart entrance and on eastbound U.S. 41 at the Wal-Mart entrance, the state Department of Transportation said. The signal at the intersection of Washington and Front streets in Marquette will be modified to add a left-turn arrow. The signal at the intersection of U.S. 41 and M-28 in Harvey will be replaced. 30 yers ago PALMER — Two Richmond Township firefighters were slightly injured battling a suspicious 15-acre forest fire near Palmer, officials said. Firefighters responded at about 4:45 p.m. to the end of County Road MK in the Sands Plains area. They immediately called for assistance from the Negaunee Township and Forsyth Township fire departments and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Natural causes such as a lighting strike have been ruled out, said Terry Popour, Gwinn Forest Area fire supervisor. The fire apparently started in two different places, officials said. The ...

30 years ago ISHPEMING — A chemical leak this morning at the water treatment plant in Ishpeming posed no danger to the drinking water supply for Ishpeming and Negaunee, said Ishpeming Fire Chief Ed Anderson. The Ishpeming Fire Department responded at 9:11 a.m. to the water plant because of a leak of about 5 to 10 gallons of sodium hypochlorite. The chemical is used to disinfect the water, said Tony McGrath, water plant manager. 30 years ago MARQUETTE — About $250,500 in federal funds will be available to the city of Marquette for a project designed to reduce future deep freeze damage to sewer and water systems. The money, hazard mitigation funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, will pay for $514,568 project to enlarge, change direction of flow and deepen sewer and water lines. The Michigan State Police Emergency Management Division will contribute $73,500 to the project. The city of Marquette will contribute $220,568, a FEMA press release said.
