30 years ago MARQUETTE — Thousands of union members marched in Marquette Monday to celebrate the last long holiday weekend of the summer and to demonstrate that Marquette County remains in large measure blue collar and staunchly pro-labor. 30 years ago MARQUETTE — Carriers on the Great Lakes moved 13.3 million tons of cargo in July, up 2.8 percent over the same period one year ago, according to the Lake Carriers Association. Iron ore shipments on U.S. vessels totaled 6.3 million tons, up slightly from July 1994. However, total iron ore shipments were 7.6 million tons, a decrease of 2.5 percent from the same time period last year. 30 years ago MARQUETTE — Seniors at Marquette High School nabbed all but 42 or 500 parking permits allotted to students this year. Juniors who didn’t get the first-ever $20 stickers say they will be parking on neighboring streets and lots around the high school. The permits were distributed when students picked up course schedules last week. 30 years ago ISHPEMING — The Republic-Michigamme and Negaunee school boards may be willing to join talks with the two other West End school districts, but only if discussion is about shared classes and services, not consolidation, officials said today. The Ishpeming-NICE Consolidation Committee decided last week to re-invite Negaunee and R-M to participate in the talks, which will now focus on joint classes and services instead of a full-scale merger.
