New website announced
Gull Rock Lightkeepers, a Copper Harbor-based non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and restoring Gull Rock Lighthouse, has announced its new website can now be found online at www.gullrocklighthouse.org.
Gull Rock Lighthouse is located on a half-acre rock in the middle of Lake Superior, just off the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula. The lighthouse was built in 1867 and automated in 1913. Since acquiring the lighthouse from the federal government and committing to its restoration twenty years ago, Gull Rock Lightkeepers has restored the roof and interior floor structures in the building, many portions of which had collapsed into the basement more than once over the years.
The new website was developed pro bono by Ethan Coté, a great-great-great grandson of James and Mary Corgan, who were stationed at Gull Rock as lightkeepers in the 1870s and 1880s. Coté said he was particularly excited to assist the organization in this way because of his family connection to the site, but also because he feels that through the website, others will come to realize what a special place Gull Rock is, even if they are not able to visit in person.
Visit the website for more information and to see historic and contemporary photographs of the lighthouse. Additional photographs can be found on Instagram at @gullrocklightkeepers and on Facebook at @Gull Rock Lighthouse.
