MARQUETTE — In-line skating will be banned from business districts after the Marquette City Commission voted Monday to amend its skateboard and bicycle ordinance. “We’re not forbidding them,” said Commissioner Jack Leadbetter. “We’re just forbidding their use on 2 percent of the streets in Marquette.” The commission added in-line skates to an ordinance that forbids roller skates, bicycles, skateboards, and coasters on sidewalks on Washington Street between Lakeshore Boulevard and Seventh Street; on Third Street between Fair Avenue and Baraga Avenue; and on Front Street from West Ridge to West Baraga Avenue. State law permits bicycles but not the other devices on city streets. Leadbetter was among the five commissioners who favored the ban. All cited safety concerns. “I have not seen all that many Rollerbladers downtown, but the 100 percent I’ve seen were traveling far too fast,” Leadbetter said. “Rollerbladers are not downtown to go shopping and I don’t believe there are many storeowners who want them Rollerblading into their places of business.” The ordinance goes into effect in 10 days, Capt. Orville Dishno said police will be expected to enfore the ordinance like any other. The penalty for violating the ordinance, a civil infraction, is a fine up to $100.

ISHPEMING — More than 150 mothers and daughters were guests at a breakfast served by the Holy Name Society of St. John’s Church yesterday following the 8 a.m. Mass. The breakfast, prepared by Clyde LaRock and his committee, was served by the Columbian Squires. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. David Spelgatti, pastor of the church, addressed the gathering. After presentations were made by the Holy Name president, Robert H. Sturm, several women were presented with gifts, and each mother and daughter received an orchid. “We were very pleased by reaction of the ladies,” Sturm said, “and we hope that it will be possible to host mothers of the parish each year on Mother’s Day.”
